Honor Your Hero

Thank you to Heroes and Horses for all they do and celebrating our heroes! ! My hero is Shawn (Gus):

My hero is Shawn Dunham. Shawn served in the U.S. Marines during Desert Storm (93-94), and at the age of 35, re-enlisted in the U.S. Army, where he served from 2007-IMG_26792013. He was assigned to the 3rd Armored Cavalry (Fort Hood, Tx) and served in Mosul, Iraq and Al Diwaniyah, Iraq. His primary MOS was 74D-Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear Specialist. Shawn was honorably discharged as 100% disabled due to PTSD and injuries (including TBI) he survived from several IED incidents. Since leaving the military, he works to express his emotions through music, learning to write lyrics that help bring healing to other combat soldiers, and those veterans dealing with PTSD and the effects of returning home. Shawn works diligently with non-profit organizations who work with soldiers through music therapy and songwriting. A day doesn’t go by that we don’t give thanks for his service in the military, but that he was able to come home. Each and every day, Shawn proves that you are who you decide to be – not what has happened to you in life. He is no stranger to hard work and his faith, determination, work ethic, humor, generosity, adventurous spirit, and kind heart are just a few of the reasons that make him our hero.

Here we go!

You know you need Jesus when you get a police escort to your walk. Just kidding, kind of. The sheriff is in the truck with us!18118910_10101465247644261_8810457037244490729_n_427

Heading to my walk to Emmaus with an open mind and open heart. Thank you to everyone for your prayers and to Rodney and Tiffany for opening the doors for Gus and I this year. “See” y’all Sunday night!

There is Always a Risk

They say, the greatest challenges come before the biggest revelation/blessing. That’s funny in itself because we’ve been under siege since December of 2015! Now, don’t get me wrong. I have had some huge blessings the last year and a half, but also a lot of heartbreak and setback. Last week, the enemy sucker punched me in the stomach and I let him steal my joy and I forgot for a while who I was. No, I’m no one important to you. I had forgotten who I was in HIM but this week, was reminded of how important I am to HIM. Today, as I prepare to leave this week for my Walk to Emmaus, I am reminded of dreams God has put on my heart.

From the archives of 4/21/16:

Your dreams were given to you because God equipped you to be able to accomplish them. He has put everything in motion, surrounded you with the right people, opened doors and moved mountains, just for you. Everything you need will be provided for you at the right time, just keep moving forward!2016_04

There is no dream that is too big or too small, too silly, too stupid, too out of this world. Want to save the world? Go for it. Teach school, join the military, make music, art, movies? Right on. Become the CEO, the janitor, or dig wells in 3rd world countries? Do it with all ya got!

The best part about the dreams we have is that we are only given a small glimpse of what God has in store for us! The future will NEVER look like we imagine, so live in today and make the best of it!

PS: If you don’t have people around you that support your dreams (even if they don’t understand they WHY of what you do), you need to find some new people! No one in your life should ever be holding you down or back – only helping to propel you forward, lifting you up,praying over you, and cheering you on!

IT REALLY IS UP TO YOU

This showed up in my FB memories today and ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhh what a timely reminder. Something I wrote a year ago:13095757_10101072561620201_3643041412830701590_n

Rise and shine! This is the day you’ve been waiting for! Today, YOU get to decide who you are. You and only you! Don’t you hate annoying people like me first thing on Monday morning?I’ve spent a lot of time in reflection the last couple of months and this weekend at the O2 women’s conference was the last piece of the puzzle for me as to deciding who I am and want to be.

“I am” are the two most powerful words you can speak over yourself because what you put after them can ultimately decide your fate, your future, your well being, and your happiness.

You have 2 choices today:

  1. Continue to live as the victim of your life, to let other people speak over your life in a way that determines who you are, to live stuck without a chance for love, laughter, trust, peace, friendship, faith, belief in who you are. You can continue to live in a way that leaves you feeling in pain, depression, anger, or at the very best: Luke warm. Or …
  2. You can make the choice to be who you’ve always been created to be. When you make that decision… to move forward – to see yourself in the light in which you have been created – all of the negative “I am / You are” fall off of you like dead weight!

From this point forward, decide who you are, who you want to be, and start working towards that goal. It won’t be easy, you won’t always know how or what to do, but the movement forward, having faith in the bigger picture, and the growth you will experience will be all you need to stay the course!

Be you! Be fierce! Be alive!
LOVE BIG,
